A child or adult can pass a standard eye chart with flying colors and still struggle to read a page without losing their place, or get headaches after twenty minutes at a screen. That’s because clear eyesight is only part of vision. The other part is how well your eyes work together: tracking smoothly, teaming up, and focusing without strain. A sensorimotor exam looks specifically at that.

Signs Worth Paying Attention To

These are common signs we look for during a sensorimotor evaluation:

Frequent headaches or eye strain, especially after reading or screen time
Losing your place while reading, or using a finger to track lines
Avoiding reading or close-up tasks altogether
Double vision, or eyes that seem to drift or not move together
A child tilting their head or covering one eye to see better
Trouble with depth perception — clumsiness, missed catches, difficulty with stairs

What a Sensorimotor Exam Measures

Eye teaming (binocular vision) — how well both eyes work together as a coordinated pair
Eye tracking — the ability to follow a moving object or a line of text smoothly
Focusing flexibility — how quickly your eyes adjust between near and far distances
Depth perception — how accurately your brain judges distance using both eyes together
